I asked with skepticism.
He just smiled, Do you want to knock a couple of tenths off your forty? That got my attention! Stefan demonstrated that keeping the knees locked was absolutely essential. You can t bend your knees and stretch the hamstrings. The knees must be locked. Of course Stefan had heard about the argument of creating too much stress on the lower back. What was his answer? Keep the weight very light. An athlete who can do a legitimate Parallel Squat of 500 pounds should only train with about 135 pounds on a SLDL and never do more than 40% of a true Parallel Squat. You don t break records or ever max out. You just always keep it very light. Beginning high school athletes or college athletes start with only 65 pounds.
Stefan felt the rard s physical gifts and skills, offensive coordinator and quarterback s coach Doug Martin is especially impressed by Garrard s coachability and positive attitude, and notes that he shows up for practice every day wanting to be a better player.

The Numbers Game

Success in football can often be linked to discipline in the weightroom, and Garrard has the numbers to prove it. He benches 320, squats 450, cleans 295, push jerks 319 pounds (145 kilos), and has a 31 -inch vertical leap without a step. When asked what his favorite lift is, Garrard replied, It would probably be the push jerk. There are not a lot of exercises in the weight room that I feel I m better at than a lot of guys, but the push jerk is the one I excel in and there s not a lot of quarterbacks push jerking 319.
Although he weighs more than most major household appliances, Garrard s eating problems are no longer a concern to the coaching staff. Says Whitten, I don t know what his bodyfat percentage is, but if you look at this guy without a shirt on, there s not much fat. The guy is as lean as lean gets.
In addition to being a leader on the field, Whitten says Garrard is proving to be a role model in the weightroom and in other areas. David is not really an outspoken guy, but here s a quarterback who can lift some of the weights the stronger guys can, and juourself and with some of your athletes? You should get some spectacular results. Thanks again to Coach Van De Zande for an 11-type inquiry. Good luck!

What about the Straight Leg Dead Lift Platform?

BFS suggests to begin doing Straight Leg Dead Lifts from the floor and then as athletes become more flexible, instead of increasing the weight, they can try it from a box or platform. This will allow athletes to get the maximum stretch possible which, according to Stefan, is the whole idea of this great auxiliary exercise that can be done quickly, in any weightroom with excellent results.

The BFS Straight Leg Dead Lift Platform is available from Bigger Faster Stronger for only $79. It is very solid and stable. It also is constructed of solid steel with a diamond tread top plate to prevent slipping. It is painted with a wrinkle black paint. be competitive with the other guys on the team, says Garrard. It just shows them that, sure, I m the quarterback, but I can do a lot of the things that you guys can do . . . even though they think that all we do is drop back and throw the football and we don t get tired or ha
