Last year McKeever was named Coach of the Year by the American Swim Coaches Association.
There s a tremendous amount of pride at Berkeley, Coughlin offers, pride in athletics and academics. A certain number of people never miss a football game. When you wear a Cal shirt and walk down the street, people all over yell, Go Berkeley! It s great to be a part of that. Coach McKeever adds, Natalie embodies what this university is about.
Coughlin has a full plate: on top of her full-time studies, she is committed to a rigorous training schedule that consumes up to five hours of her day (including plyometrics, pull-ups and heavy weight training exercises such as full squats an individualized, high-tech program developed by Mary Dempsey, a strength coach at Cal). During her free time, however, she likes to surf, cook and do photography. And, every Wednesday, she goes home to Concord to have a family dinner with her father, Jim, a police sergeant; her mother, Zennie, a paralegal; and her younger sister, Megan.
It might seem ironic that a swimmer of Coughlin s caliber is so grounded, but then, maybe it s a large part of her power. She knows, and the world knows, that she has the potential to become the best woman swimmer ever, but she doesn t let the pressure drag her down. Coughlin s firm grip on reality is balanced by an equally buoyant spirit. As she told USA Today reporter Jill Lieber, If it all ended tomorrow, it d be sad, but I could cope. I ll be a success in life, no matter what.
With Coughlin s positive outlook, success is a given. As a swimmer, she has many more miles ahead before she reaches her potential, but as far as maturity goes, Natalie Coughlin has arrived.. They love me completly but they made sure I was disciplined. My parents have never missed anything I've been involved in. They have made every game. It's a good feeling.
I have also never smoked or chewed. As far as steroids, I don't even know what they look like. I took creatine for awhile but Coach Stucky got me off it because what he felt I really needed to do was to get more agile and more flexible.
Darwin tries to keep life in it's proper perspective. Put God first in everything you do, he said. I have a list of ten goals at home. At the top of the list is to put God first. I try to pray every night and in the morning. Sometime I miss, but I try to live up to my mother's example.
Now it is our turn to continue this chain of wonderful examples. Darwin is doing it all. He is making the most of his athletics and education while keeping his spiritual values intact. Darwin is living the National African American Creed and taking full advantage of the freedoms fought and died for by Martin Luther King, Jr. and other great Americans. He eats, lives and breathes Coach Stucky's motto: Discipline, work ethic and accountability. We thank them both for allowing us to feature their beliefs and values. Darwin is an eleven! Adam s current training didn t address muscular balance, so we worked a lot of antagonst muscles to the shot put, says Poliquin. We did a lot of chin-ups, fat bar work, and a lot of work with partial movements, bands and lifting chains. One reason that lifting chains work so well is they are one of the few methods that can improve both explosive power and maximal strength at the same time. Adds Nelson, Chains force you to continually push yourself to accelerate though the lift, rather than keeping a steady pressure. We used them for
