When it came time to select a college, her choice was Berkeley, under the watchful eye of Coach Teri McKeever, the head women s coach at Cal Berkeley. Last year McKeever was named Coach of the Year by the American Swim Coaches Association.
There s a tremendous amount of pride at Berkeley, Coughlin offers, pride in athletics and academics. A certain number of people never miss a football game. When you wear a Cal shirt and walk down the street, people all over yell, Go Berkeley! It s great to be a part of that. Coach McKeever adds, Natalie embodies what this university is about.
Coughlin has a full plate: on top of her full-time studies, she is committed to a rigorous training schedule that consumes up to five hours of her day (including plyometrics, pull-ups and heavy weight training exercises such as full squats an individualized, high-tech program developed by Mary Dempsey, a strength coach at Cal). During her free time, however, she likes to surf, cook and do photography. And, every Wednesday, she goes home to Concord to have a family dinner with her father, Jim, a police sergeant; her mother, Zennie, a paralegal; and her younger sister, Megan.
It might seem ironic that a swimmer of Coughlin s caliber is so grounded, but then, maybe it s a large part of her power. She knows, and the world knows, that she has the potential to become the best woman swimmer ever, but she doesn t let the pressure drag her down. Coughlin s firm grip on reality is balanced by an equally buoyant spirit. As she told USA Today reporter Jill Lieber, If it all ended tomorrow, it d be sad, but I could cope. I ll be a success in life, no matter what.
With Coughlin s positive outlook, success is a given. As a swimmer, she has many more miles ahead before she reaches her potential, but as far as maturity goes, Natalie Coughlin has arrived.kout on Tuesday. Learning to Squat: Basic squatting principles and technique are far easier to teach and learn with the Box Squat than Parallel, Front or even Half Squats. Even in very difficult cases, athletes can keep upright with a locked-in lower back when doing Box Squats. It would be almost impossible to find any athlete who couldn t Box Squat with reasonable form on the first day. This includes girls and boys from the seventh grade on up.
Common problems encountered in teaching the Parallel Squat are easily overcome with the Box Squat. For example, the problems of keeping the heels flat on the floor or extending th be organized, manage their time well and have a career focus. The Sandersons accounted for three of those and last season they repeated again as Academic All-Americans!
The strength and conditioning progr
